Overview:
An abnormal bend in middle joint of a toe, which makes toe band downward and look like a hammer is called Hammer Toe. It is the most common deformity of second, third or fourth toe. Most common cause of Hammer Toe is wearing narrow shoes with no arch support. In the beginning hammer toe is flexible but with time it can become fixed and would require a surgery to correct. If diagnosed early, it can be treated with non-surgical methods.
Symptoms:
- Women are more likely to develop hammer toe
- Wearing tight or low quality shoes with no arch support
- Diseases like diabetes and arthritis
- Hereditary can also be a cause of Hammer Toe
When to see a doctor?
If you notice sores or infection in your toe’s middle joint or redness around the skin, you must book an appointment to see a foot & ankle surgeon. Depending on the severity of your condition, the doctor may suggest physical therapy, medicine or surgery.
